Libyan dinar today: official vs parallel market

Libya devalued its dinar in April 2025 and added a tax on official foreign currency purchases. Even so, the parallel dinar broke through 10 per dollar in October 2026, while the official rate sits near 6.4.

The gap reflects political division between rival governments and recurring disputes over oil revenue and control of the central bank.

What drives the gap

  • Political split between rival administrations.
  • Access limits and a purchase tax on official dollars.
  • Oil revenue disputes that interrupt dollar supply.
